I chose to use the sound of a Loon for this song because before I was able to support myself fully as a music artist, I worked for many summers as a tree planter doing reforestation in Canada. The call of the loon is a very signature thumb print in the soundscape in many forests in Canada, I would hear their calls echoing through the trees of the forests and over the open water of lakes at sunset and through the night. I always found the sound of their calls very interesting, it's mysterious, sometimes haunting, and at the same time brings me deep inner peace. The tribal vocal sample in the song is a recording that my professor from Audio Engineering school made himself while he was living with one of the northern native tribes in Ontario, which brings another layer of connection to the land, because for those people everything in nature is scared. Working in reforestation, I was exposed first hand to the reality of what the forestry industry does to our land, how much they take without care for the wildlife. The Loon, as well as many other animals have their ecosystems and homes destroyed or put in danger every year because of deforestation, not only in Canada but around the world. My intention with this song is to bring awareness and connection to nature to the listeners, and I hope that people will have more consciousness in their consumption of not only products made from trees but everything they use in their lives, because everything is connected!
